Lecture: “Mad or Bad? Or Both? – Psychiatric Diseases and Crime” (Lecture language: English)

Criminal offenses frighten and fascinate us humans in equal measure. This is expressed, among other things, by the fact that crime television series are broadcast daily, and crime novels have been inspiring the masses since the early 19th century. True to the motto: “Crime always works!”

But how can the behavior of certain criminals ultimately be explained? Are they mentally ill or simply evil? Why, for example, does a son who has just graduated from high school and secured a place at law school kill his own mother? And why does a pensioner over 80 suddenly kill his wife at such an advanced age? What determines our behavior, what does “guilt” really mean, and when can one speak of reduced or suspended guilt? In his lecture entitled “Mad or Bad? Or Both? – Psychiatric Diseases and Crime”, Dr. Patrick Debbelt will examine questions like these.

Dr. Patrick Debbelt is Medical Director and Head Physician of the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at the Hans-Prinzhorn-Klinik in Hemer. In his ReachHigher lecture on May 27, 2021, he will present various criminal cases, explaining perpetrator profiles and possible motives that may underlie the respective deeds. As a result, UMCH students will gain fascinating insights into the connection between mental illness and crime!
