Improve your German language skills before starting your medical studies

Before you start into your academic career, you will have the opportunity to improve your German language skills in a 1-week intensive German course at UMCH to reach the language level A1.

The A1 German Intensive Course at UMCH consists of 48 teaching units. There are four cornerstones: speaking, listening, reading and writing. The first three are covered in the active lessons. Writing, however, will be practiced while doing homework. The assignments you are given in class will be checked by your lecturer the next day and you will have the opportunity to ask questions and get feedback. The entire course is designed so that you can start the new academic year as well prepared as possible. In a relaxed atmosphere, you will learn how to deal with everyday situations, such as ordering food or drinks, shopping or visiting your favorite places in Hamburg. The course will include numerous games and activities and you will get the chance to get to meet some of your possible fellow students. During the week, classes will take place 3 times a day for 90 minutes each. Participation is possible both on-site and online – as it suits you best! To make the most of your time prior to studying, we recommend booking the course together with the subsequent Pre-Medical Course to benefit most efficiently from our medical preparatory offerings.

Why you should participate in the course

Proficiency in German is a required skill for everybody who aims for spending clinical teaching phases – as during UMCH’s medical studies program – at German teaching hospitals. A solid level of B2 is required for these parts of your studies.
For all medical students aiming to continue their careers after the conclusion of their studies in Germany, good German skills are even more important. Only if you master German on a C1 level, you will be granted a license to practice medicine in Germany.
This license (“Approbation”) is required for residency (special medical training) in Germany. Completed specializations from Germany are recognized all over the world, are highly valued, and can be door openers for jobs worldwide.

Benefits of participating in the German Course at UMCH

UMCH’s intensive German course is taught by an experienced teacher who will guide you through the basic linguistic obstacles and difficulties of living in Germany.
By the end of the course, you will be able to hold basic everyday conversations in German and you will already have the necessary vocabulary and solid grammatical knowledge to continue learning German.
