After the official opening of the UMFST-UMCH Days, a presentation on the use of augmented reality technology in teaching took place on the morning of April 29, 2022 at the Hamburg campus. For this purpose, Lecturer Alexandra Lazăr (Coordinator of the UMFST-UMCH VR Center) as well as Assoc. Prof. Cristian Boeriu (Coordinator of the UMFST VR Center) were present. They were joined by Prof. Marc Lazarovici from the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich. Prof. Lazarovici, in addition to his work at the University in Munich, also serves as President of the European Society for Simulation Applied to Medicine (SESAM), among other positions.
Teaching using augmented reality, besides many other possible applications, allows students to practice interacting with patients in a realistic way – for example, by accessing detailed patient records, including X-rays and CT scans, as well as by talking to and examining patients.
After an introduction to the topic of augmented reality by Prof. Boeriu, Lecturer Lazăr and Prof. Lazarovici demonstrated the various applications of the AR glasses from Microsoft (Hololens2). For this purpose, avatars of real patients were examined for various clinical pictures. In conclusion, Prof. Boeriu emphasized that the potential applications of this forward-looking technology are potentially limitless.
