On May 8, 2026, the 4th edition of the UMFST–UMCH Research Day for Medical Students took place across the campuses in Hamburg, Germany, and at the Faculty of Medicine in English of the George Emil Palade University of Medicine, Pharmacy, Science, and Technology (UMFST) in Târgu Mureș, Romania. The event provided medical students from years two to six with an international platform to present their scientific research projects.
A total of 121 scientific papers were submitted, covering a broad spectrum of topics ranging from clinical research and innovative therapeutic approaches to prevention and public health. The large number of submissions highlighted the growing scientific engagement and academic commitment of students at both campuses.
Among the highlights of the event were presentations by internationally renowned guest speakers. Professor Andreas Bikfalvi, MD, PhD, from the University of Bordeaux, France, spoke about current developments in oncology and vascular biology. The internationally recognized scientist is considered a leading expert in tumor research and angiogenesis.
Another keynote speaker was Professor Walter Sackett from the Loma Linda University School of Medicine in the United States. In his presentation, “A University Hospital in a Blue Zone,” he discussed how medical excellence, prevention, and lifestyle-oriented healthcare can be successfully integrated into an academic hospital environment.
During the Research Day, 16 students were honored for outstanding research achievements and presentations. All submitted abstracts will be published in a supplement of the scientific journal Acta Medica Marisiensis.
The organizers described the event as a great success and emphasized the importance of international scientific collaboration and the promotion of young medical researchers. The UMFST–UMCH Research Day has once again established itself as an important platform for student research and academic exchange.
