As part of the Teaching Hospital Days 2026, the event series MED Insights provided UMFST-UMCH students with a unique platform for inspiration, scientific exchange and career orientation. In concise 18-minute presentations – inspired by the well-known TED Talk format – experts from medicine, research and clinical practice shared insights into their fields as well as their personal career paths.
The event brought together distinguished alumni, physicians and medical societies, highlighting the diversity and dynamism of modern medicine.
The program opened with Philipp Kähler-Witte, UMFST-UMCH alumnus, who spoke about specialist training in emergency medicine in Germany. He explained the qualifications, challenges and opportunities associated with this specialization and offered valuable insights for students interested in pursuing a career in emergency medicine.
An interdisciplinary presentation by the Plastic Surgery & Dermatology Society @UMFST-UMCH focused on “The Science of Beauty.” Marina Campanha, Shanequa Tulipan and Dunya Wahisi discussed how aesthetic medicine analyzes and shapes the human face using scientific methods. Their presentation combined perspectives from plastic surgery, dermatology and modern imaging techniques.
Career development was another key topic of the event. Philipp Richter, also a UMFST-UMCH alumnus, addressed the audience with his talk “Doctor, Researcher, Leader: Choosing the Right ‘Extra’ after Your MD.” He explored the different opportunities available after completing medical studies and demonstrated how additional qualifications—such as research experience, management skills or public health training—can shape individual medical careers.
In his presentation “Beams of Hope: How Radiation Therapy Changed Medicine,” radiation oncologist Michael Rau from Klinikum Lüdenscheid illustrated how radiation therapy has transformed the treatment of many cancers. Using clinical examples, he explained how technological advances have significantly improved the precision and effectiveness of modern therapies.
The session concluded with PD Dr. Dr. Dirk Jentschura, Medical Director of UMFST-UMCH, who presented “Hernia – a Common but Not a Simple Problem.” He emphasized that although hernias are among the most frequent surgical conditions, their treatment requires careful diagnosis and advanced surgical techniques.
MED Insights not only provided valuable academic perspectives but also created opportunities for students to engage directly with experienced physicians and learn about different career paths in medicine.
Through its compact and inspiring format, the event demonstrated the importance of dialogue between students, alumni and clinical experts—while highlighting the many possibilities that lie ahead for the next generation of medical professionals.
