More Space for the Medicine of Tomorrow: UMFST-UMCH Expands Its Hamburg Campus

Around 2,500 square metres of additional space will create new opportunities for practice-oriented medical education, modern learning and a vibrant academic community from October 2026.

UMFST-UMCH continues to grow. By expanding its Hamburg campus, the university is making a targeted investment in the future of medical education. From October 2026, students enrolled in the English-language medical degree programme, as well as participants in the Medical Foundation Track courses, will have access to approximately 2,500 square metres of additional space.

“With the expansion of our campus, we are creating far more than just additional space. We are creating a modern learning environment in which medical knowledge, practical training and personal interaction come together even more closely. In doing so, we are consistently investing in the quality of education and in the future of our students,” explains Hon.-Prof. Christopher M. F. Musmann, M.Sc., Managing Director of the UMFST-UMCH Campus Hamburg.

A key feature of the campus expansion will be the new Simulation Center. The planned facilities will combine realistic medical training environments with flexible workshop and seminar spaces. At several state-of-the-art simulation stations, students will be able to practise clinical procedures and typical examination scenarios in a safe and controlled learning environment. Flexible examination and simulation beds, mobile medical equipment and movable workstations will support a wide range of training scenarios and enable a strongly practice-oriented approach to teaching.

Central workshop tables will provide ample space for collaborative learning in small groups. Large-format interactive presentation technology will support the preparation and evaluation of simulations, as well as briefings, seminars and collaborative case discussions.

The debriefing sessions that follow the simulations are an essential component of practical medical education. Students reflect on their approach, discuss the decisions they have made and work together to develop possible solutions and alternative strategies. In this way, the training promotes not only medical skills, but also teamwork, communication and a strong sense of responsibility.

“Medical competence develops where sound knowledge meets practical experience. Our aim is to provide students with spaces in which they can train for clinical situations in a realistic setting, reflect on their decisions and gradually develop the confidence they need to act effectively in clinical practice,” adds Hon.-Prof. Christopher M. F. Musmann, M.Sc.

The new Simulation Center reinforces a key element of the educational approach at UMFST-UMCH: the close integration of scientifically grounded knowledge and practical application. Students will have the opportunity to practise medical scenarios repeatedly, gain experience and develop greater confidence in their clinical skills before applying their knowledge in a real clinical environment.

In addition to the Simulation Center, the expanded campus will feature modern seminar rooms and two new auditoriums. These will provide further opportunities for small-group teaching, interactive classes, academic lectures and larger university events. Flexible room layouts and technology concepts will accommodate a variety of teaching formats while supporting face-to-face interaction as well as digital and hybrid learning.

Another key focus of the expansion is the creation of new spaces for learning, relaxation and social interaction, including a Community Lounge, a Play Room and two large Learning Labs. These areas will provide space for focused independent study, collaborative work and informal exchange between students, course participants and faculty members. After all, a modern campus is about more than lecture halls and classrooms. It thrives on personal connections, mutual support and an international community in which people learn both with and from one another.

Participants in the Medical Foundation Track will also benefit from the new facilities. The preparatory courses provide prospective students with essential foundations in the natural sciences while offering an initial insight into medical studies and university life. In the future, participants will be able to experience the practice-oriented learning environment and modern infrastructure of UMFST-UMCH even more extensively.

The campus expansion therefore represents far more than physical growth. It is an investment in the quality of education, application-oriented learning and a campus experience that combines high academic standards with meaningful personal interaction.

With the new facilities scheduled to open in October 2026, UMFST-UMCH is creating more space for knowledge, practical experience and shared growth – and, ultimately, for the medicine of tomorrow.
