New Teaching Hospital – St. Elisabeth Hospital in Damme

The St. Elisabeth Hospital in Damme is now a UMCH teaching hospital. A corresponding contract between representatives of both institutions was signed recently. The facility near Osnabrück thus joins the growing ranks of teaching hospitals in which UMCH’s future doctors will undergo their practical training starting in the winter semester 2022/23.

As a Catholic hospital providing basic and standard care, St. Elisabeth Hospital fulfills its mission with six main departments and one inpatient department. In addition to specialist clinics for Internal Medicine, Neurology, General, Visceral, Trauma and Spinal Surgery as well as Anesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine, patients can also visit outpatient facilities in the areas of Sleep Medicine, Wound Outpatient Clinic and Physiotherapy, among others.

St. Elisabeth Hospital places particular emphasis on the specialties of Orthopedics, Neurology and Gynecology. In the neurology clinic with a certified stroke unit, more than 2,000 patients are treated each year. The main focus here is on the treatment of strokes. In addition, the hospital has a recognized endometriosis center in the department of gynecology and obstetrics and an endoprosthetics center in the department of orthopedics, where doctors are dedicated to the implantation of artificial joints.

In this teaching hospital, students are thus given the opportunity to become acquainted with a broad spectrum of services and thus find ideal conditions for clinical-practical teaching from the 3rd year of study.

For the St. Elisabeth Hospital, the cooperation with UMCH not only means a strengthening of the image and academization of the location. The early involvement of medical students in everyday hospital life also offers the opportunity to train highly qualified junior doctors themselves and to win them for the hospital in the long term. In addition, the collaboration with UMCH gives the St. Elisabeth Hospital access to doctoral programs and teaching assignments, as well as connection to the university’s international research network. By training highly motivated students in the clinical part of their studies, the St. Elisabeth Hospital actively shapes teaching at the bedside and, ultimately, makes an essential contribution to eliminating the shortage of doctors.
