UMCH Hamburg Celebrates Its First Graduates

Hamburg. The UMCH – University of Medicine in Hamburg, Germany's first English-language medical university, has celebrated its first class of graduates. A total of 74 students completed their medical training and were honored in a formal graduation ceremony held at the Grand Elysée Hotel in Hamburg.

With its international, English-taught medical program, UMCH is a nationwide pioneer. “Our graduates are well-equipped for global medical careers,” says Hon.-Prof. Christopher Musmann (UMCH Campus Management). According to Musmann, this is a core mission of UMCH, and the university has gained valuable experience in fulfilling it during its first six years since its founding. Students from more than 50 nations are enrolled at the Hamburg campus, making UMCH a true international hub for future medical professionals. Many international students choose to stay in Germany after completing their studies, thereby helping to address the ongoing shortage of medical professionals in the country.

The innovative approach taken by UMCH is also frequently praised by its more than 30 affiliated teaching hospitals, which—unlike at most medical universities—are spread across Germany and beyond. These hospitals, as well as the students, commend UMCH for being one of the first medical universities to integrate clinical practice at such an early stage in the curriculum. UMCH places strong emphasis on linking theoretical knowledge with hands-on clinical experience. Under the supervision of physicians and clinical teams, students apply what they learn directly in the day-to-day hospital setting.

During the graduation ceremony, UMCH’s first cohort expressed their gratitude to the people who supported them throughout their studies. They acknowledged the challenges inherent in medical education but emphasized that the unique concept behind UMCH has now opened international career paths for them.

One such graduate is Julia Blömer from Neuenkirchen-Vörden, who deliberately chose UMCH “because it offers the opportunity to study medicine in English right here in Germany.” She emphasizes that medicine is an international field and that the Hamburg campus provides a strong foundation for global medical careers. The international atmosphere—with fellow students from around the world—was another key factor in her decision.
