Two student clubs, two exciting workshops: Hon.-Prof. Dr. Michael Klein, Director of the Department of Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery at Klinikum Lüdenscheid, joined the Pediatrics & Pediatric Surgery Society and the Junior Research Club to share valuable insights into pediatric orthopedics and scientific research with UMFST-UMCH students.
How do you perform an orthopedic examination on children, and what should you pay particular attention to? These questions were at the heart of the workshop "Orthopedic Examinations in Pediatric Patients," organized by the Pediatrics & Pediatric Surgery Society.
Hon.-Prof. Dr. Klein introduced fundamental examination techniques and explained the specific considerations involved in examining young patients. He emphasized the importance of a sensitive and patient-centered approach when working with children. Even small changes in behavior, limited movement, or unusual crawling and walking patterns can provide valuable clues about potential medical conditions.
Through practical examples and a demonstration video, students gained insights into pediatric orthopedic examinations. They also had the opportunity to practice examination techniques themselves and discuss clinical findings together.
The following workshop, "Decode Research Success," focused on scientific research. Together with the Junior Research Club, Hon.-Prof. Dr. Klein provided insights into the fundamentals of medical research and answered students' questions about research projects and academic development.
Key topics included scientific integrity, the proper use of sources, and the transparent documentation of research methods. The responsible use of artificial intelligence in research was also discussed. Hon.-Prof. Dr. Klein emphasized that critical thinking, reproducible results, and adherence to scientific standards are essential for high-quality research.
Students also received practical advice on scientific presentations and how to handle challenging questions. The workshop provided valuable guidance for their own research projects and future academic work.
Both events offered UMFST-UMCH students the opportunity to deepen their medical knowledge and benefit directly from an experienced expert's insights. Special thanks go to Hon.-Prof. Dr. Klein, as well as the Pediatrics & Pediatric Surgery Society and the Junior Research Club, for organizing these valuable workshops.
