UMFST-UMCH Hamburg Honored with the German Medical Award

Silver Medal for Outstanding Health Communication – Exemplary Nationwide Network of Teaching Hospitals and Practices Established

Düsseldorf/Hamburg. The University of Medicine, Pharmacy, Sciences and Technology of Târgu Mureș – Campus Hamburg (UMFST-UMCH) is proud to have been awarded the German Medical Award 2025. The jury recognized the university’s outstanding achievements in health communication.

“We are very happy,” said Dr. Jamil Hmida, Coordinator of Teaching Hospitals. “This award honors our work and recognizes more than 30 German teaching hospitals that are actively involved in the clinical education of our students.” The German Medical Award acknowledges UMFST-UMCH’s distinctive strategy, particularly its communication within a comprehensive nationwide network of teaching hospitals and practices – a truly exemplary model.

“UMFST-UMCH sees communication as a key factor in future-oriented medical education,” said Hon.-Prof. Christopher Musmann (UMFST-UMCH Campus Management). “We build bridges between cultures, regions, and generations – contributing to the sustainable strengthening of medical care in Germany.”

At the heart of this recognition lies the strong networking and communication between the campus, teaching hospitals, teaching practices, and regional partners – an area in which UMFST-UMCH stands out. With a clear communication strategy, the university successfully builds an international community of medical students, integrates regional partners, and showcases the diversity of the medical profession. This European educational project thus sets new standards in health communication.

More than 30 teaching hospitals and 100 teaching practices are integrated into the training model. From the third year of study onward, students spend several weeks each year in hospitals and are introduced early to everyday clinical practice. Cities and districts can allocate their own study places to secure medical talent locally.

Through this approach, UMFST-UMCH builds a bridge between international medical education, regional healthcare, and modern communication.

UMFST-UMCH offers the first fully English-language medical program in Germany, combining international perspectives with regional healthcare needs. Currently, over 800 students from more than 50 nations are enrolled. International medical students learn German up to the highest level during their studies to successfully complete their clinical training in German hospitals and seamlessly continue with specialist training in Germany. At the same time, UMFST-UMCH provides new study opportunities for German high school graduates – also in cooperation with regional hospitals and local authorities.

The award was presented on October 9 at the House of Physicians in Düsseldorf. In the Health Communication category, projects were honored that use innovative and effective communication to make a lasting impact on the healthcare sector.
