German Red Cross blood donation campaign at UMCH: students prove their sense of responsibility

October 16, 2020

On October 15, 2020, a big blood donation campaign of the German Red Cross (DRK) took place on our campus between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. On this occasion the UMCH students demonstrated their sense of responsibility – after all, blood cannot be produced artificially and is necessary for medical care. Patients are dependent on donor blood for operations, emergency treatment and chronic diseases.

Spread over two seminar rooms, a total of 44 UMCH students attended the potentially life-saving event, in which 45 places were available. A compulsory hygiene protocol for donating blood was followed, which was further aggravated by the ongoing corona pandemic. For example, only symptom-free students were admitted to donate after they had undergone a check with a doctor from the German Red Cross, who decided on their suitability for donation. In addition, the participants received a goodie bag afterwards instead of the meals that are usually offered on-site during blood donation campaigns.

We would like to thank the team of the German Red Cross for their excellent work and all UMCH students who agreed to donate blood.

There are already dates for the next blood donation campaigns at UMCH. Those who could not participate this time or would like to donate again in the new year, will have the chance to do so on March 11 and October 14, 2021.
