ReachHigher – Prof. Tiberiu Bataga gives lecture on the use of surgical robots

October 5, 2022

On October 4, 2022, the first ReachHigher edition of the 2022/23 academic year was held in the UMCH Lounge. Our guest was the renowned orthopedic traumatologic surgeon and UMFST-UMCH teacher Prof. Tiberiu Bataga, who gave a lecture entitled “Robotic Surgery in Orthopedics”.

At the well-attended event, Prof. Bataga presented various existing robots from different manufacturers that are used in orthopedic operations – for example, when inserting knee or hip prostheses. He used videos to illustrate the various technical procedures and also discussed the advantages and disadvantages of the cutting-edge surgical methods. When practicing with the surgical robots in simulations, for example, there is the possibility of making mistakes without causing physical harm or fearing legal consequences. In addition, working with some of the robots is particularly time-saving, which ultimately leads to cost savings for hospitals and practices. In contrast, there are also a few limitations, for example, in the combinability of different prostheses and application possibilities of the various manufacturing companies. After a question and answer session, the entertaining ReachHigher edition came to an end.
