About Elisabeth-Krankenhaus Essen
The Elisabeth Hospital in Essen was founded as early as 1843 and, with a history spanning more than 175 years, is the first hospital in the Ruhr metropolis of Essen (North Rhine-Westphalia). As an acute care hospital, it employs approximately 1,400 staff members and has 513 beds. Since 2006, it has been part of Contilia, a healthcare provider with a long Christian tradition. With its healthcare network of hospitals, medical care centers, preventive care, early detection, and rehabilitation services, as well as housing and long-term care options for seniors, Contilia supports people in the central Ruhr region throughout their lives. Doctors, nurses, and therapists provide both inpatient and outpatient medical care using state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment methods, as well as modern medical technology. In addition to 13 specialized departments—such as those in the fields of diabetology, vascular surgery and phlebology, cardiology and angiology, and kidney and hypertension disorders—the UMFST-UMCH teaching hospital also comprises seven centers. These include the Heart and Vascular Center, a Gynecologic Oncology Center, a Center for Esophageal Diseases, a Pancreatic Center, and a Pediatric Neurology Center within the Department of Pediatrics. Students at UMFST-UMCH can therefore expect a broad spectrum of disciplines and specialties for their clinical training, which they begin in their third year of study.
