Marina Strähle comes from Karlsruhe. She knew early on that she wanted to become a doctor – not because of family tradition, as there are no medical professions in her family, but because of a deep inner feeling: to help people and strengthen them in difficult moments. The initial trigger was surprisingly simple – her childhood doctor's kit. ‘I used to treat my dolls and stuffed animals,’ she recalls with a smile. ‘Of course, it was just play, but it sparked my enthusiasm for becoming a doctor.’
Marina deliberately chose UMCH for her medical studies. The opportunity to combine theory and practice at an early stage was particularly decisive for her. ‘I didn't want to spend years just sitting in lecture halls; I wanted to learn directly from patients. This combination gave me confidence and sharpened my view of medicine.’
Today, Marina is starting a new chapter: she is beginning her career as an assistant doctor in vascular surgery at the Diakonissen-Stiftungs-Krankenhaus in Speyer – the very place where she gained practical experience during her studies. The fact that Speyer is close to her hometown of Karlsruhe is an additional bonus for her: ‘It's nice to start my career in a familiar environment and be close to my family at the same time.’
Looking back, she is convinced that she made the right decision: ‘The early practical experience at UMCH prepared me perfectly for my career start. I gained confidence in myself there and know that I have found my place in medicine.’ Marina's message to prospective medical students is clear:
‘Listen to your heart. Medicine is not an easy path, but if you follow it with genuine conviction, you get an incredible amount back.’
