Dr. Charalambos Dokos speaks on ethics and antimicrobial stewardship
Two recent events placed the focus on one of the most important questions facing modern healthcare: What defines a great doctor today? Skills and clinical success remain essential – but increasingly, leadership, ethical responsibility and global awareness are becoming just as critical.
Dr. Charalambos Dokos, Board Certified Surgeon and Emergency Physician, Medical Nutritionist and Fellow of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine, returned as a guest speaker to address these evolving demands in medicine. With an interdisciplinary academic background including Health Economics, Bioethics, Public Health and a PhD, Dr. Dokos combines clinical expertise with a broader healthcare perspective.
In his Reach Higher lecture “Current Trends in Work Ethics in the Medical Field: Beyond Careers Towards Leadership,” Dr. Dokos explored how professional values are shaping the future of the medical profession. As healthcare systems grow more complex and demanding, physicians are increasingly called upon to act not only as clinicians but also as responsible leaders. The lecture highlighted the importance of ethical decision-making, professional integrity and leadership skills in guiding healthcare teams and shaping patient care.
Complementing this broader perspective on medical leadership, Dr. Dokos also led a workshop on “Antimicrobial Stewardship in Emergency and Intensive Care.” Antibiotic decisions made in emergency departments and intensive care units can have immediate life-saving consequences while simultaneously influencing global antimicrobial resistance.
Drawing on extensive experience in acute and emergency medicine, the session focused on practical strategies for responsible antibiotic management under pressure. Participants explored the principles of selecting the right drug, dose, duration and route of administration while navigating the realities of high-intensity clinical environments.
Together, the lecture and workshop highlighted a central message: clinical excellence today must be paired with ethical responsibility and global awareness. Whether guiding healthcare teams or making critical treatment decisions, modern physicians play a vital role not only in treating individual patients but also in shaping the future sustainability of healthcare.
