UMCH offered the exciting elective course “Law and Medical Career,” led by Hon. Prof. Dirk Naumann, Campus Director and experienced attorney. The course was aimed at medical students and provided them with essential legal knowledge crucial for their future careers.
The course kick-off was far from ordinary: Prof. Naumann encouraged interactive communication, and at times, Kinder Surprise eggs flew through the lecture hall – a reward for active participation and engagement. Throughout the two-day course, over 100 surprise eggs were distributed to the students present. The eggs not only encouraged active and open communication but served as a creative metaphor for Prof. Naumann’s teaching style. “Medicine is like a legal case; you never know what’s inside. Every time it’s a surprise!” he explained. This analogy not only drew smiles but also drove home the importance of understanding one’s rights and obligations as a doctor, as legal issues can arise unexpectedly at any time.
On the first day of the two-day course, participants were first given a comprehensive insight into medical licensing in Germany and the EU, as well as the specific requirements for obtaining a medical license in countries such as the United Kingdom, Canada, and the USA. The challenges and obstacles of bureaucratic processes were central to the discussion. The elective course was divided into individual Reach Higher lectures, which allowed students from other cohorts to attend as well. With over 100 attendees in the lecture hall, interest was high, and Prof. Naumann managed to make even complex topics understandable and engaging.
The following day continued with the momentum of the first day. The focus was on fundamental legal knowledge essential for doctors to avoid hidden legal pitfalls in their profession. Things got especially interesting with topics like medical liability and insurance, as students learned the importance of solid protection to avoid financial trouble in the event of a serious incident.
To maintain participants’ focus through the afternoon, pizza was served to the 60 attendees, providing a welcome energy boost before continuing with the practical application of the material through real-world case studies.
The course was a complete success and left a lasting impression on the participants. Enthusiastic about new perspectives and valuable insights, the students left the event equipped with the necessary legal knowledge to successfully shape their medical careers.
