Application procedure

Study Medicine at UMCH in Hamburg

No grades-based admission procedure

There are no restrictions on admission to the study program at UMCH, so no specific average grade is required to apply for the program. Future medical students are selected based on their written application documents and the standardized HMS Admission Test, which consists of a 90-minute written part and a 15- to 20-minute oral part in English. The written part consists of 75 multiple-choice questions on biology, chemistry and general knowledge. All three areas are equally weighted. The oral part focuses primarily on the applicant’s personal qualifications and motivation. This may also include questions about the application documents you have submitted (e.g. work or internship certificates for previous activities in the medical field or volunteer work etc.). The results of the written and oral part are included in a ratio of 60:40 in the applicant’s overall assessment.

Admission requirements

The prerequisite for studying at UMCH is a general university entrance qualification (Abitur or equivalent). It is also possible to apply with a non-German school leaving certificate – provided that the respective school leaving certificate corresponds to the German Abitur (e.g. A-Levels or International Baccalaureate). Applicants with a different higher education entrance qualification should contact the UMCH team for further information. Anyone wishing to study from autumn 2020 should start planning now. Early application is recommended, as the allocation of study places is carried out successively. At the time of application, you should be in the final year of the upper level (e.g. Gymnasium, High School) or already have a general higher education entrance qualification.

Application already possible before leaving school

You can (and should) also submit your application before you receive your high school degree. The application for the winter semester 2020/21 is now open. You can apply easily and conveniently via our online application portal. You just need to upload all the necessary information and documents – UMCH’s student advisors will support you in preparing your application documents and all further steps of the application process. Only after successful admission do the application documents have to be sent to the university as hard copies.
