Following his inspiring ReachHigher lecture at UMCH, Hon.-Prof. Dr. med. Dirk Jentschura, Medical Director of UMCH, conducted an intensive hands-on workshop titled “Colon Anastomoses” the next day. The workshop was held in two sessions – morning and afternoon – with 20 participants each to ensure optimal supervision.
The students had the unique opportunity to learn basic surgical procedures in the field of anastomoses under the guidance of the experienced surgeon. The workshop began with an introduction to basic knotting techniques, which form the foundation for any surgical procedure. Subsequently, the participants could directly apply their newly acquired knowledge: using pig feet as practice objects, they trained various suturing techniques essential for surgical procedures such as intestinal anastomosis. These practical exercises provided the students with an initial insight into the challenges and intricacies of surgery and allowed them to improve their technical skills.
The workshop was a complete success – so much so that additional students gathered outside the door, hoping to secure a spot. The high demand and enthusiastic feedback from the participants underscore the importance of such practical experiences in education. “The opportunity to learn from such an experienced surgeon as Prof. Jentschura is something very special,” one student remarked enthusiastically.
In light of the great interest, we at UMCH are pleased to announce that Hon.-Prof. Dr. Jentschura may soon return to the campus for further workshops, giving students who could not secure a spot this time the chance to gain this valuable experience.
The combination of the ReachHigher lecture and the subsequent workshop impressively demonstrated how theory and practice intertwine. The participants were able not only to learn surgical techniques but also to deepen their enthusiasm for surgery. Such events are a central component of practical training at UMCH and help prepare our students optimally for the challenges of the medical profession.
