On December 3, 2021, the inaugural lecture of Priv.-Doz. Dr. med. Christian Berg took place on the campus in Hamburg-Bahrenfeld. After introductory words by the Dean of UMFST-UMCH, Assoc. Prof. Simona Muresan, MD, PhD, she awarded the title of “Honorary Professor” to the Chief Physician of the Center for Internal Medicine at the Protestant Hospital Mettmann.
The main part of the event, which took place under strict 2G rules and was attended – both on-site and online via livestream – by students, faculty and participants in the medical preparatory course College Semester, consisted of the inaugural lecture titled “Diabetes and Obesity 2021 – Challenges and New Approaches”. During the presentation, which lasted about an hour, the physician from the UMFST-UMCH teaching hospital discussed promising developments in diabetes technology, such as closed-loop systems, as well as the increased mortality of diabetic patients in the event of COVID-19, among other topics. Following the lecture, some of the numerous university students and faculty in attendance posed their personal questions to Dr. Berg, who answered them in detail in a panel discussion.
After the official part, all participants met in the UMCH Lounge to round off the event with a drink of their choice and pastries. On this occasion, the students who will start their clinical-practical training at the Protestant Hospital Mettmann in the current academic year also had the chance to meet Dr. Berg in person, resulting in a lively exchange between the students and the future associated teacher of UMFST.
