Inaugural lecture of Dr. med. Christoph Vogt on the topic of “COVID-19 Pandemic”

On Friday, October 28, 2022, the inaugural lecture of Dr. med. Christoph Vogt, who was awarded the title of “Honorary Professor” in the course of the event, took place at the UMFST-UMCH Campus in Hamburg-Bahrenfeld.

After brief speeches by UMFST-UMCH Dean Assoc. Prof. Simona Muresan and Prof. Dirk Naumann zu Grünberg of the campus management, Dr. Vogt was officially presented with the certificate of honorary professorship by the Dean. Before the start of the lecture titled “2 Years of COVID-19 Pandemic – Lessons Learned: The Past, The Pressence and The Future”, a UMFST-UMCH student played “Nuvole Bianche” by Italian composer Ludovico Einaudi on the piano. Hon-Prof. Vogt then addressed the topic of “COVID-19 Pandemic” in a detailed presentation. In addition to outlining the history of SARS-CoV-2 as well as facts and figures on cases worldwide and a comparison with other coronaviruses such as SARS and MERS, he also explained, among other aspects, the most important recent developments in the fields of drugs and vaccines. He concluded by summarizing what he described as the key lessons learned from the pandemic’s evolution over the past two and a half years. Here, he mentioned the great benefit of masks and vaccines in containing the pandemic, although he still sees room for improvement regarding vaccines. In addition, he added, the drugs against COVID-19 are very good by now, but research on the virus, as well as on the disease and its treatment, still needs to be pushed forward.

After a number of questions from the audience, including UMFST-UMCH students and affiliates of the newly appointed honorary professor, a sparkling wine reception was held in the UMCH Lounge for all event attendees to interact over snacks and beverages.

Hon.-Prof. Vogt recently became involved in his own ultrasound workshop at the Hamburg campus in addition to his work at the UMFST-UMCH Teaching Hospital in Moers, the St. Josef Hospital. In Moers, he serves as Director of the Center for Internal Medicine and Chief Physician of the Clinic for Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Infectiology and Oncology.
