Prof Dr Harald Schwacke Honorary Professorship at UMCH

Hamburg/Speyer. Dr. Harald Schwacke (56), Medical Director at Diakonissen-Stiftungs-Krankenhaus Speyer, is the new Honorary Professor at the Hamburg Campus of the University Medical Center Neumarkt (UMCH).

During the ceremony, Campus Director Hon. Prof. Dirk Naumann delivered the laudatory speech. The certificate of the Honorary Professorship was solemnly presented by Dean Assoc. Prof. Simona Muresan. The event concluded with a musical performance by second-semester student Victoria Nissl.

Hon. Prof. Dr. Harald Schwacke has been Chief Physician of Cardiology in Speyer for 16 years and has delivered several lectures on cardiological topics at UMCH. Additionally, he serves as the coordinator for the practical phases of UMCH students at Diakonissen-Stiftungs-Krankenhaus Speyer, which has been a teaching hospital of the faculty since 2019. Originally from the Eifel region, he studied medicine in Cologne, Würzburg, and Hamburg, earning his doctorate in pulmonary medicine before transitioning to cardiology.

In his inaugural lecture at the Hamburg Campus, he discussed the evolution of catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation, which was first performed 30 years ago. He highlighted how research could drive technological innovations, which in turn inspire further research activities. He noted that the complete isolation of the pulmonary veins with a circular ablation has now become the standard therapy. Furthermore, in the early 2000s, the balloon-based cryoablation technique was successfully introduced, offering an alternative approach to radiofrequency ablation with a single catheter.

In recent years, ablation technology and techniques have significantly improved, accompanied by more effective safety and efficacy measures. Catheter ablation has become the therapy of choice for atrial fibrillation, and he pointed out the emerging technique of pulsed field ablation as an example of what to expect in the future.
