On December 7, 2023, an edition of the ReachHigher lecture series with Hon.-Prof. Dr. med. Dirk Jentschura took place at the UMCH Campus in Hamburg. In his lecture entitled “Why it is Important to Learn Anatomy from Minute 1”, the former Chief Physician of the Clinic for General and Visceral Surgery at the UMFST-UMCH teaching hospital in Speyer, the Deaconess Foundation Hospital, used practical examples to illustrate the importance of learning anatomical structures for the medical profession.
Hon.-Prof. Jentschura, who has been Medical Director of UMCH since the beginning of 2023, started his lecture by emphasizing the importance of a sound knowledge of human anatomy for all medical specialties. After a brief overview of the history of surgical procedures from ancient times to the present day, he explained the different types of suture materials used to connect tissue. Depending on their specific properties, they are used for different applications. The result of a procedure depends, among other factors, on whether the sutures are self-dissolving or not. Jentschura also pointed out considerable differences in the needles used in surgery. He used videos to illustrate the theory conveyed, including one on anastomosis of the bowel, to provide detailed explanations of how surgical procedures are performed.
