On June 19, 2022, a ReachHigher edition entitled “Possibilities and Limits in Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery” took place at the campus in Hamburg. The guests were Prof. Dr. med. Christoph Andree and Dr. med. Robert J. Musmann from the Sana Kliniken Düsseldorf.

After a brief interview in which the two speakers introduced each other, Prof. Andree began his part of the event. First, he gave the students present an overview of what plastic and aesthetic surgery is all about. The primary goal, he said, is always to improve the patient’s quality of life. He then went on to illustrate the different types of operations that he and his team perform in Düsseldorf using numerous images and videos. Among other procedures, he discussed gender reassignment surgery – for example, on the breast – as well as breast augmentation or reduction. He also discussed the advantages and disadvantages as well as possible risks of the various procedures. Dr. Musmann, who has already led several workshops at UMFST-UMCH in the past, subsequently gave an introduction to the topic of ” Residency Training”. He currently completes his own residency at the Sana Kliniken in Düsseldorf. He began by describing the course of a typical working day, before presenting those present with a three-stage method that he himself had developed, which can be helpful in choosing a specialty. Finally, he explained why he chose Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery.

After the official part of the event, the students had the opportunity to ask the two doctors their questions about the topics of the event, which was taken up by many of the aspiring physicians. The spectrum ranged from questions about the necessity and frequency of follow-up operations to ethical issues – for example, in the case of patients who develop an addiction to plastic surgery – and the importance of social media for the competitiveness of plastic and aesthetic surgeons.
