Recently, on the initiative of the University of Medicine, Pharmacy, Sciences and Technology of Targu Mures (UMFST of Targu Mures) – to which the UMCH campus in Hamburg belongs – a decision was made together with the local authorities to rebuild the UMFST campus sports hall. As a result, a fully-equipped infirmary for Covid-19 patients was built within 10 days. The building, with an area of 2,369 m2, has been given a modular structure and now contains a total of 80 beds, intended for corona patients with moderate symptoms who were confirmed in the administration of Targu Mures District Hospital.
The project shows in an exemplary way that by mobilizing manpower and resources accordingly – even when the medical infrastructure is overloaded – great things can be achieved in a short time. Moreover, the unifying and progress-oriented role that a state university must assume by anticipating the needs of society as well as having the ability to participate both in the development of proposals for solutions and in their practical implementation becomes clear here.
